Time for Your A1C!

What is the A1C?

The A1C test looks at your blood sugar, and is used to diagnose pre-diabetes and diabetes. The test gives you and your provider an idea of your average blood sugar levels over the last two or three months, to see if you are more at risk of developing diabetes, or to help you manage your diabetes if you are already diabetic.

How often should I get tested?

If you are…

  • Over 45: you should be tested once for a baseline (to see what your regular blood sugar levels look like) and then every 3 years.
  • Under 45 and overweight or have a family history of diabetes or other risk factors: you should be tested once for a baseline (to see what your regular blood sugar levels look like) and then every 3 years.
  • Diabetic: you should be tested at least twice a year, or more if you are changing medicines, have other health conditions, or at the advice of your provider.
