Help Us Celebrate Community Health Center, Inc.’s
50th Anniversary
1972-2022
Fifty years ago, on May 1, 1972, when a group of Wesleyan University students and Middletown activists raised the banner saying Health Care is a Right, Not a Privilege we started on this journey to build a healthier community for all of us.
Perhaps you weren’t there with us then, but somewhere in our 50 year history you have marched with us. Whether through small acts or big ones – you have been a part of our history.
Together we have made a lasting impact on the health of our community and built a world class primary health care system that is changing the future of health care for the underserved.
Now we are ready to celebrate and show the world what can be done when we come together with a shared mission and vision.
We want to say thank you. We know it will require lots of new ideas to address the problems our communities face. Share with us your thoughts on issues we should be taking on during the next 50 years.
But first we’d love to have you catch us up on what you’ve been doing. Thank you and welcome home.
We Have Grown!
From humble beginnings, CHC now serves more than 150,000 patients at fixed health center locations and nearly 200 school-based health centers across the state of Connecticut, with training and education initiatives reaching across the globe.
In addition to our health center work, we reach people through our programs, including:
- The Weitzman Institute: The innovation and research arm of Community Health Center, Inc.
- The National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement: An accredited nonprofit education school that trains Medical Assistants to work effectively in today’s high-performing primary care settings.
- ConferMED: A national eConsult provider improving access to specialist expertise for patients while supporting better clinical outcomes and reduced costs.
- The National Nurse Practitioner Residency and Fellowship Training Consortium: A nonprofit membership, education, advocacy and accreditation organization created to advance the model and rigor of postgraduate nurse practitioner and joint nurse practitioner/physician assistant residency and fellowship training programs.
CHC’s Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic
Since early 2020, CHC has delivered on a call to action from the state of Connecticut to conduct mass testing and vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Community Health Center, Inc. established the largest mass vaccination site in the state at the Pratt & Whitney Runway in East Hartford and has vaccinated more than 600,000 people.
CHC continues to pivot its health care model by expanding telehealth services and pop-up vaccine clinics in communities around the state to reach people in need.
50 Years Have Gone By In a Flash
We look forward to celebrating our achievements and future endeavors with our staff, patients and community partners.
